Beginning of School Year News
First Week:  2014-15

Greetings and welcome back to a Grade One school year 2014-15!  I am so excited to have your children in class!  We had a great first day and are off to a wonderful  start!  These first few days will be focused on getting your child familiar with the classroom and the building.  We’ll begin to build routines and rules:  classroom, cafeteria, bus and school.  This focus will also continue for the next few weeks while academic routines are gradually introduces.  It is common for the first grader to be exhausted by the end of the school day.  Don’t be surprised to see your child arriving home quite tired.  The class usually fully adapts by the end of October.

Bus Tags: Until Friday, September 5, (the day after Kindergarteners begin school), your child will be dismissed wearing a bus tag that designates dismissal area.  Please make sure that this tag is returned each day, including Friday September 5.  After that date, the tags will no longer be needed and can remain at home.

Forms:  Please return all forms ASAP.  The office looks for them beginning the very next day after they are sent home.  I will provide a two-pocket folder, our home/school folder, in which all correspondence can be transported to and from school.  Developing organizational habits is critical.  I encourage students to empty this folder upon arriving home at the end of the school day and to use it to transport any forms/paper for me or the school that are sent from home.  Please help your child  to develop this routine by supervising and assisting this practice consistently.  Using a folder in such a systematic manner facilitates developing organization skills.

Class Directory: In addition, please complete and return the notice regarding a class directory.  A permission form with signed parental consent is needed in order to publish a class directory.  Participation in our class directory is optional but proved to be beneficial in past year.  Even if you do not want your family’s info published, just check off  “No” and return so I am aware of your decision.
Please print email info clearly so there is no confusion (e.g. number 1 or letter I can get confused).
Your child’s info will not be published unless I have written permission.  I also need it in a timely manner by Friday Sept. 12.

Class Specials:  We have one special per day and the times each day vary.  Please make sure your child wears appropriate footwear on gym days.  Here is our special schedule:

Monday Gym
Tuesday Gym
Wednesday Music
Thursday Art
Friday Library/Health (alternating weeks)

Art Shirt Request:  It is important that you send in your child’s art shirt ASAP.  An oversized T-Shirt works great and is easy for a first grader to get on and off.

The special schedule is also listed with times on our class blog.

PIN: Parent Information Night (PIN). Please check the Memorial site for time and date.  I look forward to meeting you on this evening.  There are a few things the boys and girls will be doing to prepare for this night.

Contact Info: If you have any questions/concerns, it works best if you can contact me through the following options:  send a note with your child inside the home/school folder or e-mail me at lscier@email.medfield.net.  Please, keep in mind that e-mails cannot contain time-sensitive requests or pick-up dismissal notices.

Another place to access information if you have questions regarding procedures is on the Medfield Public Schools website, Memorial link, under “Student Handbook”

Information about our classroom can be accessed on my blog page located in the appropriate tab.  (a quick link is below my signature on this letter) Please visit and input your contact e-mail address.  Once completed, please respond to confirm when the blogspot emails you with this request.  You will then get notified with any updates on the blog page!  At the end of the school year, you can opt out of the notification.

Sincerely,
