Wrapping up September!

It is hard to believe that the month of September has come to an end!  I am amazed at what the class has accomplished in this time.  We have worked hard to build classroom routines and community.  We have been able to dive into the first grade curriculum and are off and running.  We have learned some of our jobs we will be doing during Daily 5.  Each job has been introduced as a whole class and we discussed what the jobs look like and why we do our jobs.  The kids love when I model what not to do during a job and they have to share the things I did that we shouldn't do!  They have learned read to self and have build their reading stamina.  They also enjoy read to someone, and work on writing.  During this time we practice our sight words at the word work table,  as well as read our poems from our poem notebooks during the poetry job.  They are getting so good at working on each job and working the whole time!

Math

In math we have worked on different story problem types.  We solve story problems in our journals and show how we thought through the problem.  We have done a lot of sharing of strategies with the whole class.  Sharing helps us learn strategies to work smarter and not harder to solve our story problems.  When we solve our story problems we make sure we write a starting equation, show our work, write and ending equations and a label.  We will continue to practice and work on story problems through out the year.  We also played some math games such as roll and record, compare and collect 20.  We have moved on to learning different strategies to add numbers.  We talked about the counting on strategy where we put the larger number in our head and count on from there.  We also learned about doubles problems and played a game called doubles path.

Fundations

We also began our phonics program which is fundations.  We first reviewed letter sounds and formations, tapped out and wrote cvc words and also started to learn our digraphs, sh, ch,wh, th and ck.

Writers Workshop

We started writers workshop and began by thinking of topics to write about.  We began to plan out our stories by first, then, next and finally.  The students began writing small moment stories (narratives) and were so excited to share these events that happened to them.  They have already written so many stories and they keep them in their writing folders.
