Spring is in the Air!

Science

Not only has spring sprung outside but so has room 28!  We have started a  new science unit on plants and animals.  This work provides a lot of hands on activites with different ways of growing plants.   We learned the structure and funtion of the plant. We learned the roots function is to soak up the water and nutrients in the soil and feed the plant. Without this the plant won't grow.

One investigation we planted alfalfa and rye grass and made our own lawns.  We watchde them grow, mowed them and recorded what happened to the two different types of seeds after they were mowed.  Ask you child which is a better seed for a lawn.

We also planted wheat seeds in straws.  Observing these we could see how the roots grow down and the stem grows up toward the light.

We also planted cuttings from an existing planst and are observing how they form roots in water.

Math

In math we have been working on learning about money.  We learned what each coin looks like and also how much each coin is worth.  We played a lot of games to learn how to add money.  We played race to a dollar...

Writers Workshop

In writing we started a new topic and are learning how to share our opinions.  We brought in our own collections and decided which we thought was the best in the collection.  We wrote our own opinion and gave many reasons why we think it is the best.  We also asked a friend their opinion and added others thoughts into our writing.  We will be writing more about our opinions on different things.

We were also fortunate enough to have two special activities.  We had a visit from author David Hyde Costello.  He talked to us about where he gets his ideas for writing his books and showed us how he draws his characters.

We also have a visit from BrianChevalier.  We worked with  his to write a school song.  It was lots of fun!
