Bring on April and Spring Weather!

It has been great to have so many consistent days in school now that the winter weather is behind us. I know that I am ready to get rid of the snow pants and boots and move on to shorts and flip flops.

Non Fiction Chapter Books

Writing  has been very busy in first grade.  We worked on out nonfiction chapter books.  It is amazing how much everyone wrote about things they are experts on.  We spent a lot of time adding, sharing, editing, revising and adding some more to our chapter books.  We worked a long time making these books.  Working on one topic really build their writing stamina.  Also writing for such a long period of time it was amazing to see them fill so many pages!  We also spend time editing. Using our editing checklist was first.  They looked for punctuation, best spelling and making sure all the words from their thoughts got onto the page and it made sense.  After that they got help from a partner who read their piece and gave feedback.  We also learned to do a one minute editing check.   To help us add to our topic they even used photos.  We now will be working on our opinion pieces...can't wait to see how these kiddos can persuade!

Money and Time

In math we have been learning to tell time and money.  It is so fun for everyone to be able to read digital clocks and analogue clocks.  Everyone had a lot of fun playing games on the smartboard and with friends to practice reading the time. We also worked on leaning more about money.  We practice counting coins everyday during our morning meeting so it has been fun to spend more time on this topic.

Plants and Organisms

We started our science unit on plants and organisms.  This a a very fun and memorable unit where the children grow their own plant and observe different habitats.   We had a visitor from Stoney Brook Wildlife Sanctuary. She taught us about different habitats and what animals need in their habitat.  We got to draw a habitat for a particular animal.  It was fun!

Today we planted our seeds.  We are so excited to watch them grow!  Here they are today...
