Wrapping up October

Halloween Fun
Room 28 has been buzzing with excitement in October.  Halloween has been a big topic in the class. Our school wide Halloween parade will be on Friday morning October 30 at 9:30.  Come see all the kiddos dressed up!  It is so exciting for them!  Our party will be later in the afternoon.  So much fun!

Daily 5
Our Dialy 5 has been up and running and we are doing a great job moving from one job to the next. We are meeting at the teacher table to read in small groups.  This is a great time that I get to read with a small group at their just right level.  We each read and then talk about our stories.  We are working on retelling the story in their own words after they read. This skill takes a lot of work and we will be working on this by retelling orally as well as writing what the characters, setting and main events are of the story.

Word Study
During our word study lessons we have been learning about digraphs.  We learned the sh, th, wh, ch and ck digraphs and are tapping and writing words that have these digraphs in them.  We have added more "trick words" to our word wall and have been practicing writing these during daily 5.  Ask your child who the H brothers are.


Math
Our math time has been focusing on addition strategies up to ten.  We have learned what doubles and near doubles facts are.  Each lesson we learn a strategy and then practice and play a game that we use the strategy.

Incentives
In room 28 there are a lot of ways we earn rewards.  Each student has a paper star and when they are "caught" being good they get to put a sticker on their star.  When they earn 10 stars they can choose a special treat.  They may choose to be photographer for a day, have recess in the classroom with two friends,  or have lunch with two friends and me in the classroom.  We also have our pom pom jar.  They earn pom pom as a class.  If we get a compliment from another teacher or are all showing "expected" behavior we can earn pom poms.  When we have filled the jar we get a class treat.  Some ideas the class talked about was pajama day or silly hat day.  I know we will be getting a lot of treats this year!
