April Showers and...snow!

April certainly came in with a bang of a snow storm!  Here in first grade we have had a super start to the month.  We were fortunate to have Ms Marla come visit us  from Stoneybrook.  She shared information with us about the habitats around us and what organisms need to survive in their habitats.  She brought stuffed animals and we created a habitat that they could live in.  We are looking forward to our trip to Stoneybrook to see Marla again!  We also showed what green thumbs we have here in room 28.  We each planted our own seeds to watch and observe how they grow.  Ask your child what plant they are growing.  Sunflower, pea, kidney or pumpkin.  We will be creating our own habitats here in the classroom after vacation.

Math

In math we have been working on place value.  We are learning the meaning of tens and ones.  We are using materials and hundreds charts to show two digit numbers and compare them.  We also have been working on measurement and time.  We measured objects with different non standards units of measure and are learning how to tell time on the hour and the half hour.

Writing

Thank you for sending in a collection with your child.  We have started our unit on Writing reviews.  The children are learning how to write opinions about their collections in convincing ways.  The children will learn different writing techniques to persuade others toward their opinion.  We will be writing catchy introductions and conclusions as well.  We will move onto writing reviews as we progress in this unit.

We also had a visit fro a local author Melissa Stewart.  Melissa has written over 150 nonfiction science books.  It was fun hearing about how Melissa came to writing non fiction books.  We have enjoyed reading some of her books in class.
