Happy New Year!!

We are back in gear in the new year.   Our class adjusted back into our routine with ease.  Monday started with excitement as we welcomed our new friend to class, Alyssa.  The students were eager and excited to show her our classroom and school.  It is great to have her! Welcome Alyssa!

Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop

In reader's workshop we are continuing to work with non fiction.  We are learning about the different text features in nonfiction books.  We learned that non fiction books have things that fiction books don't have such as a table of contents, bold words, index, captions and diagrams.  We looked at non fiction books and hunted for these features.  We connected this with our writers workshop as we are writing non fiction books and can put these features in our own writing!

Math

We jumped right back into a new strategy in math focusing on making ten.  Our math games, strategies and story problems are all focusing on making ten.  Fluency with this skill is important for the students to understand place value which we will be moving to shortly.

Science

We continued our unit on Solids and Liquids with the focus on liquids.  We compared glue and water.  We looked, touched and put drops on paper to discover the qualities these liquids have and how they were alike and different.  We also compared oil and shampoo.  We will be doing more with mixing these liquids next week and even having drop races!  This is a fun and hands on unit that we try not to get to messy with!
